This course explores the science, technique, and art of vocal development through three key pillars:

  1. Pitching :the ability to sing or speak on accurate musical notes or tonal levels.

  2. Range :the span of notes a voice can access and sustain comfortably and powerfully.

  3. Vocal Warmups : preparatory exercises that activate and condition the vocal apparatus to ensure peak performance, prevent injury, and maintain voice agility.

Through a structured and pedagogically sound progression of 10 deeply elaborated modules, you will gain technical understanding, practical tools, and personalized techniques to maximize their vocal capacity.

CORE ELEMENTS OF THE COURSE

Pitching

Pitching is central to both singing and accurate, expressive speech. Whether in tonal languages like Igbo and Yoruba or in melodic performances, pitch distinguishes meaning and emotion. This course examines the physiology behind pitch production (vocal fold tension, airflow, and resonance), offers tools for identifying and correcting pitch errors, and introduces ear-training exercises for real-time pitch perception and replication.

Vocal Range

A broad vocal range expands a performer’s creative potential. This course introduces concepts like chest voice, head voice, mixed voice, falsetto, and vocal registers, and then teaches safe and systematic approaches to stretch one's vocal range gradually without strain. Exercises are carefully sequenced to align with your current range, allowing both upward and downward expansion through controlled breath, posture, and muscle coordination.

Vocal Warmups

Just as athletes warm up before a race, vocalists and speakers must prepare their instrument for optimal performance. The course introduces daily vocal warmups to build vocal stamina, eliminate vocal fatigue, and encourage consistent vocal tone. These include lip trills, sirens, hums, scales, arpeggios, vowel shaping, consonant exercises, and jaw and tongue relaxers.

  1. Module 1: Introduction to Voice and Vocal Health

    • Anatomy of the vocal system (larynx, vocal folds, resonators)

    • Common vocal issues and injuries

    • Vocal hygiene: hydration, rest, food, and lifestyle

    • Psychological and emotional connection to voice

  2. Module 2: Understanding Pitch – The Science and Practice

    • What is pitch? Frequency, tone, and tuning

    • How pitch is perceived and controlled

    • Pitch in speech vs. pitch in singing

    • Identifying pitch through listening exercises

  3. Module 3: Exploring Your Vocal Range

    • Understanding vocal registers: chest, head, mix, falsetto, whistle

    • Voice types: soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass

    • Finding your natural range

    • Avoiding range strain and vocal injury

  4. Module 4: Mastering Pitch Control

    • Pitch slides, steps, intervals, and intonation

    • Using the piano or app-based tools for pitch correction

    • Singing on pitch vs. expressive pitch manipulation

    • Vibrato and micro-pitch movements

  5. Module 5: Daily Vocal Warmup Routines

    • Short (5–10 minutes) warmups for daily use

    • Morning voice recovery exercises

    • Exercises for opening up the voice before recording or speaking

    • Post-performance vocal cooldowns

  6. Module 6: Expanding Vocal Range Safely

    • Range extension exercises (ascending and descending)

    • Mix voice development for high notes without strain

    • Diaphragmatic control and airflow support

    • Managing vocal fatigue when extending range

  7. Module 7: Breath Control and Vocal Support

    • Diaphragmatic vs. chest breathing

    • Silent inhalation and breath pacing

    • Phrasing control through sustained breathing

    • Linking breath to projection and endurance

  8. Module 8: Ear Training and Pitch Accuracy

    • Interval recognition (major 2nd to octave)

    • Call-and-response pitch games

    • Practicing with pitch matching apps and tools

    • Auditory memory and tonal mapping

  9. Module 9: Practical Application in Singing and Speech

    • Using pitch and range in public speaking

    • Expressive speaking for podcasts, presentations, and performance

    • Genre-based applications: gospel, classical, Afrobeat, pop, spoken word

    • Live stage and microphone technique

  10. Module 10: Long-Term Vocal Maintenance and Development

  • Building a lifetime vocal care routine

  • Recovery protocols for hoarseness or strain

  • When to see a speech-language pathologist or ENT

  • Setting and tracking personal vocal goals
