The McGraw Fellowship for Business Journalism supports journalists with ambitious investigative or enterprise story ideas that “Follow the Money,” but who lack the resources to execute them. The Fellowship provides editorial and financial support for in-depth reporting in text, audio, or short-form video formats. (Note: long-form documentaries are not eligible, and this is not a residency fellowship, all work is done from the journalist’s own office.)
Grants of up to $15,000 per project.
Freelancers may use part of the funding as a stipend for living expenses.
Funds are tailored to project scope and reporting needs.
Open to journalists with at least five years of professional experience.
Supports both freelancers and staff reporters/editors at news organizations or journalism non-profits.
Staff applicants may apply in the name of their organization.
Applicants must submit:
Story Proposal (max 3 pages):
Explain the story’s significance and potential impact.
Highlight originality and how it differs from previous reporting.
Provide a proposed reporting plan and timeline.
Include the media outlet if already lined up.
Three journalism samples showcasing your ability to handle an in-depth story.
Up-to-date resume.
No references are required initially. Finalists will be asked for two references from editors or other professionals familiar with your work. Freelancers with reference challenges may discuss alternatives with the McGraw Center.
