The Walters Kundert Fellowship, presented by the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), supports post-PhD researchers in conducting field research in some of the world’s most challenging environments — specifically Arctic and high mountain regions. Established in 2017 with support from the Walters Kundert Charitable Trust, this fellowship advances research in physical geography, particularly studies that enhance understanding of environmental change and its global impacts.
£10,000 annual grant to fund field research activities.
Access to the Royal Geographical Society’s professional network and expert advice on fieldwork, logistics, and safety.
Support for publication and dissemination of research through Society journals and communication channels.
Opportunities for career development, including Chartered Geographer eligibility and participation in RGS specialist research groups.
Invitations to the UK’s largest program of geographical lectures and events.
Applicants must:
Hold a post-PhD qualification at the time of application.
Be affiliated with a UK university or research institute, or be a Fellow/member of RGS-IBG conducting research outside the UK.
Conduct field research in Arctic or high mountain environments in physical geography.
Focus on studies that advance understanding of environmental change, past or present.
Proposals for fieldwork already completed or currently underway are not eligible.
Note: While a geography background is not mandatory, the project must advance geographical knowledge.
The fellowship supports studies in sensitive environments that are key indicators of climate change, including:
Arctic warming and permafrost changes
Glacier dynamics and ice field studies
Ecosystem responses in high mountain environments
Interdisciplinary projects combining geophysics, AI, and environmental monitoring
Previous recipients have conducted groundbreaking work in regions such as West Greenland, Hindu Kush-Himalayas, Cordillera Darwin, and the Canadian Arctic.
United Kingdom (for affiliated applicants) and global research locations for Fellows/members outside the UK.
