The Getty Pre- and Postdoctoral Fellowships support emerging researchers working on significant projects aligned with the annual theme of the Getty Scholars Program. The 2026–27 theme is:
Theme: Provenance – focusing on the ownership, transfer, and transformation of art objects across time and geography, including issues of looting, illicit trade, restitution, and ethical collecting practices.
Fellows will benefit from the Getty Research Institute (GRI) collections, the newly renovated Getty Provenance Index, weekly lectures, and a vibrant scholarly community at the Getty Center or Getty Villa.
Predoctoral Fellowships
For PhD candidates who have advanced to candidacy.
Focus: Dissertation research and preparation for publication.
Residency: Getty Center
Stipend: $30,000
Postdoctoral Fellowships
For researchers who completed their PhD within the past 5 years (after Sept 1, 2021).
Residency: Getty Center or Getty Villa
Stipend: $35,000
Scholar Grants
For established researchers with a PhD obtained before Sept 1, 2022.
Residency options: Getty Center or Getty Villa

6 months: $43,000
9 months: $65,000
Note: Previous Getty Residential Grant recipients may reapply after 6 years. Current Getty staff and immediate family are not eligible.
