The OHCHR Indigenous Fellowship, launched in 1997 by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), is now open for applications for its 2026 program.
This prestigious fully funded fellowship will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, in June/July 2026. It is designed to provide indigenous peoples with practical training on the United Nations system, particularly mechanisms dealing with human rights and indigenous issues.
By the end of the program, fellows are expected to transfer the knowledge and skills gained to their organizations and communities, strengthening local advocacy and participation in global platforms.

To deepen participants’ knowledge of the UN system and its work on human rights.
To build capacity and leadership among indigenous representatives.
To strengthen advocacy for indigenous rights at local, national, and international levels.
To empower fellows to train and inspire other indigenous community members upon return.
The training is conducted in five languages:
English
Spanish
French
Russian
Portuguese
Must be indigenous (applications from non-indigenous persons will not be considered).
No age limit – all generations are welcome.
Must be nominated and endorsed by their indigenous community or organization.
Sponsoring organization should have substantial and representative membership.
Fellows must commit to training other community members after completion.
Selected fellows will receive:
Full airfare coverage to and from Switzerland.
Living expenses for the duration of the program.
Basic health insurance during the stay.
Unique access to UN bodies and international human rights experts.
