The Asia in the World Fellowship, offered by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), is a fully funded program inviting early- to mid-career researchers from around the world to conduct innovative research in Asian Studies. The fellowship promotes global collaboration and provides participants with an exceptional opportunity to work across multiple international institutions.
Phase 1 – Leiden, Netherlands (6 Months)
Engage in debates and discussions
Collaborate on research projects
Publish your work and participate in IIAS-led activities
Phase 2 – Co-Host Institute (3–5 Months)
Conduct research at one of the following partner institutions:

Centre for Research in Anthropology, Portugal
Centro de Estudos Afro-Orientais, Brazil
French Institute of Pondicherry, India
Kasetsart University, Thailand
Institute for Urban Research, Malmö University, Sweden

School of Culture Resources, Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan

Phase 3 – Return to IIAS in Leiden
Share insights and research findings from the co-host experience
Participate in closing discussions and presentations
Fully funded 12-month fellowship
Support for travel, accommodation, and living expenses
Access to IIAS resources, workshops, and research networks
Collaboration with leading international researchers
Open to all nationalities
Must be an early- to mid-career researcher
PhD required (or defense confirmed by February 15, 2026)
Fully available from October 2026 – October 2027
Cannot hold other fellowships or job contracts during the program
