The National Geographic Society is inviting applications for the Extreme Weather and Natural Hazards Solutions Grant Program. This initiative supports impactful, science-based projects that develop solutions to the growing threat of extreme weather events and natural hazards such as:
Wildfires
Hurricanes & Tornados
Droughts & Floods
Heatwaves & Severe Storms
The objective is to increase adaptability and resilience, while demonstrating tangible positive impacts on people and nature.
Projects may address (but are not limited to):
Extreme Weather Field Research – Collecting meteorological and environmental data to improve modeling, prediction, rapid response, and adaptation.
Nature-Based Solutions – Conserving and restoring ecosystems that increase resilience or are especially at risk.
Technological Solutions – Leveraging new technologies (e.g., AI, autonomous vehicles) to improve prediction and response.
Local-Level Strategies – Developing innovative community-led solutions, tools, and approaches to prepare for and recover from extreme weather events.
Open to individual project leaders with demonstrable experience in science-based solutions.
No strict educational requirements — applicants must show expertise, skills, and commitment.
Applicants must be 18+ years old.
Open for both new and ongoing projects.
Not open to current National Geographic Society staff members.

Successful projects will:
Engage with at-risk human communities and natural systems.
Demonstrate tangible impact and scalability.
