The University of Bayreuth Centre of International Excellence “Alexander von Humboldt” invites applications for its 2026 Starter Grant Programme. This initiative promotes excellent research and strengthens international collaboration across disciplines.
The Centre fosters exchange across boundaries: between disciplines, cultures, and generations of researchers. It also engages with society and politics, while promoting diversity and gender equality in its awardees.
Grant amount: €10,000 to cover project realisation costs
Family allowance: €250/month for grantees with at least one child
Follow-up funding: Successful Starter Grant recipients may apply for a Booster Grant of €20,000, based on demonstrated outcomes (e.g., joint publications, conferences, workshops).
Applicants must be affiliated with an institution outside Germany
Open to all disciplines (special rulings for African Studies apply)
Applicants must present challenging, innovative research projects of high academic quality
Selection is merit-based, considering:
Research excellence and achievements (e.g., high-ranking publications)
Quality and potential of the cooperative project
Opportunities for broader networking with Bayreuth researchers
Applicants must secure a local host researcher at the University of Bayreuth, who will provide office or lab space and infrastructure
Grant begins upon signing the Declaration of Acceptance
Funds are transferred during the grantee’s first visit to Bayreuth (must occur within one year of acceptance)
A project report must be submitted within 15 months of acceptance
Early visits to Bayreuth are encouraged
The programme is highly competitive
Strongly encourages applications from female scholars and researchers who can diversify the university’s research profile
